The Centenary Dinner
That’s it then. Here’s to the next hundred years!
Surely a highlight of the Centenary year was the dinner at Coaley. Great company; a full house; excellent food; super entertainment. Milling around with a glass of fizzy chatting with various ringers not seen for some time got us off to a sociable start. The food was served professionally and unobtrusively although those ringers trying to imitate a chicken with their hats as beaks were going to find the food a struggle. The people of Coaley did us proud with food that compared very favourably with many restaurants. A really tasty feast!
As the feast drew to a close we were entertained with handbell ringing which left several of us feeling rather inadequate, especially as there had been no time to practise. Ian’s introduction to Hugh Evans’ toast of the Wotton Branch was informed and entertaining and Hugh’s words took us back over several incidents in the past. Perhaps it was just as well that John Taylor couldn’t be with us, as so much of Hugh and John’s early ringing was linked. There followed a number of toasts which highlighted the extent of the roles held within the Branch and the years with which so many have been involved. Christine then serenaded us with two Jake Thackray ballads including that wonderful tale of the bantam cock which all vultures should take to heart!
Ian as Master of Ceremonies got the “tenor” just right and huge thanks should be given to everyone involved. It was the culmination of a really busy year for Peggy as Chairman but I should think everyone in the Wotton Branch should be extremely proud to be associated with such a successful event in such a significant year.
