Quarters rung in August 2014
When researching material for Wotton Surprise* we collected information about the members of the Wotton Branch lost during WW1. It was resolved then that we should remember these former members by ringing the bells in their home towers as an act of remembrance. The towers involved were: Berkeley, Chipping Sodbury, Coaley, Slimbridge, Stinchcombe, Stone, Thornbury** and Yate.
Phase 1 would be to join with ringers all over the country and ring at the anniversary of the start of the conflict, ie August 2014. Arrangements were made to ring at as many of the eight towers as possible on the weekend of 9/10 August, 2014. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to ring at Thornbury that weekend but a quarter peal was rung there two weeks later.
* Wotton Surprise was the history of the Wotton Branch, compiled as part of the Branch Centenary celebrations, published in 2010
** At the time of the foundation of the Wotton Branch in 1910 Thornbury was a member.
A total of 33 ringers were involved in the ringing of these eight quarter peals.

Quarters rung on the centenary of the deaths
Phase 2 would involve ringing a quarter peal on the 100th anniversary of each death, in the ringer’s home tower. As research continued information was compiled about each ringer and in several cases we made contact with the ringers’ families. So, a brief act of remembrance, led by the local clergy, was added to our plans prior to memorial ringing.
All 18 members lost in WW1 were remembered with a quarter peal rung in their home tower on the anniversary of their death.
Sidney Cornock of Berkeley had been a ringer at Wotton-under-Edge until his marriage and so a quarter peal was rung there as well as at Berkeley on the anniversary of his death.
Details of all the remembrance quarters follow below.
In ringing these quarter peals: 47 Branch members took part
11 members from adjoining branches also contributed
Where sufficient information was collected, an article was submitted to The Ringing World to accompany the quarter peal details.
Information was also supplied to the local press.
